Safety ladder
Working safely and increasing safety awareness are themes that are gaining attention from an increasing number of companies. Many industrial accidents still occur every year due to unsafe actions, sometimes even resulting in fatalities. More and more companies are therefore aiming for consciously safe trading. If you as a company want to work on this in concrete terms, you can think of certification using the Safety Ladder. This is an awareness method in which you as an organization focus on improving safety awareness and behavior. The ladder has 5 steps:
The Safety Ladder has 2 important principles:
- maximum focus on own initiative, practical results and innovation;
- minimal burden and hindrance to the company by rules and regulations.
The ladder briefly explained
The 6 main topics of the safety ladder are:
- Leadership and involvement: is safety a priority for the management and is the management a good example?
- Policy and strategy: a prepared policy statement must be available, but the effectiveness of the policy must also be considered.
- Organization and contractors: how are suppliers selected and how is the performance of desired (safe) behavior assessed?
- Workplace and procedures: think of permits, Task Risk Analyzes or workplace inspections.
- Deviations and communication: are accidents reported? How are unsafe situations handled?
- Audits and statistics: think of behavioral audits. Is knowledge also used in the industry?
Advantage when awarded
The Safety Ladder stimulates ambition in companies by means of a fictitious award in a tender. The instrument is used by clients and contractors in tenders. The basic principle of the ladder is that companies' efforts are honoured. A higher score on the ladder is rewarded with a concrete advantage in the tendering process, in the form of a notional discount on the tender price. The step that a company has reached on the Safety Ladder translates into an award advantage. The higher the step or level on the certificate, the more benefit the company will receive in the award weighing. The contracting organization determines the award advantage per level of the ladder.
